Brass Coated Steel Wire

The brass coated steel wires for steel cord are fine-gauge steel wires made from high-quality high-carbon steel wire rods as the base material through precise drawing and surface copper (or brass) coating processes. They are key semi-finished products for manufacturing the framework materials of radial tires and other rubber products. Their core function is to enhance the mechanical properties of rubber products and improve the wear resistance, fatigue resistance and safety of tires.

Main Applications

As semi-finished products of steel cord, brass coated steel wires are mainly applied in the following fields:

  1. Tire Manufacturing: Used in the framework support layers of automobile tires, truck tires, construction machinery tires and aircraft tires, significantly improving the impact resistance and durability of tires.

  2. Rubber Reinforcing Materials: Such as the reinforcing structures of industrial rubber products like conveyor belts and high-pressure rubber hoses.

Material and Chemical Composition

Base Material:
  • High-carbon Steel Wire Rod: With a carbon content of 0.62% to 1.02%, it has high cleanliness, high strength (tensile strength of 970 to 1220MPa) and a uniform sorbite structure.

Coating Layer:
  • Brass Coating Layer: A copper-zinc alloy layer (brass) is formed on the surface of the steel wire through electroplating or electroless plating processes to enhance the bonding strength with rubber.
  • Coating Performance: It needs to meet the requirements of smooth surface, no burrs and dense structure.

Product Standards and Technical Requirements

National Standards:

GB/T 27691-2011: Specifies the grades, chemical compositions and mechanical properties of wire rods for steel cord, such as tensile strength, reduction of area, etc.
Other Related Standards: Including tensile test (GB/T 228.1), coating weight test (YB/T 135-2017), etc.

Performance Requirements:

Mechanical Properties: The semi-finished steel wires need to have high tensile strength (up to 1070 to 1280MPa) and good ductility (reduction of area ≥ 35%).
Coating Uniformity: The thickness of the copper coating layer needs to be precisely controlled to ensure the bonding strength with rubber and corrosion resistance.

Manufacturing Process

1.Base Material Preparation:

Smelting and Continuous Casting: The processes of hot metal pretreatment → converter refining → vacuum degassing → continuous casting are adopted to ensure the cleanliness of the molten steel.
Rolling and Heat Treatment: After rolling by a high-speed wire rod mill, a uniform sorbite structure is obtained through online heat treatment.

2.Drawing and Copper Coating:

Drawing Process: The φ5.5mm wire rod is drawn into a thin wire with a diameter of φ0.15 to 2.0mm. During the process, the deformation amount and lubrication conditions need to be controlled to reduce surface defects.

Acidic Copper Plating: A copper sulfate plating solution is used to complete the deposition of the coating layer, ensuring that the coating is smooth without nodules.

3.Post-treatment:

Stranding and Shaping: The copper-coated steel wires are stranded into strands or ropes by a double twisting machine to form the final structure of the steel cord.
